Skagway Landscape Photographer
Michael Klensch - Artist's Statement

"The Earth, the Seas, the Light, the lofty Skies,
The Sun, and Stars are mine; if these I prize."

-Thomas Traherne

As a Skagway, Alaska resident and freelance landscape photographer, I look to the natural beauty that surrounds me everyday for limitless photographic inspiration and adventure. Educated and trained in environmental sciences, I have spent most of my career working for a number of National Parks across the country. Exposure to the beauty of the natural world has created a personal passion for the preservation and stewardship of nature, which I express through photography. I believe that photography not only provides aesthetic pleasure for the eyes, but also if done responsibly and conscientiously, is an artistic medium that delivers a very genuine understanding of who we are, and how we fit in.

I have always been, and continue to be awe-struck by the incredible beauty and variety in natural landscapes. However, true wilderness is now just as threatened with extinction as the many speicies of flora and fauna that seek sanctuary within its protective borders. To see the beauty and magic of the natural world with one's own eyes is to truly comprehend how fortunate we are to share this extraordinarily beautiful planet. By recording some of this magic with my camera, I hope to inspire others to view wilderness with wonder, respect and humility. For by seeing in this manner, we might then be more willing to preserve these special places for the future generations from whom they are borrowed.

After moving to Alaska, I was immediately overwhelmed with the surrounding grandeur and beauty. Since so few have the opportunity to see a largely intact natural landscape on this large scale, it espeically brings me great joy to share these boreal images with others. There are no "tricks" to my photography. In fact, it is rather "low-tech" compared to the techniques and equipment generally used by today's professionals. The aurora images are not filtered or altered. Every time I peer through my camera's viewfinder is like seeing this amazing landscape for the first time. The grandeur of snow-capped mountains, deep blue icy fjords, crystal clear alpine lakes, and star-filled auroral painted night skies continue to inspire and stir emotions that are hard to put into words. It is my sincere wish that these photographs communicate where words fail.

Images from my portfolio are frequently published by major national and international astronomy based publications, both in the US and in Britain, including Sky and Telescope, Astronomy and Astronomy Now. Other publication credits include: Outdoor and Nature Photography, Popular Photography, PhotoLife, Birder's World, National Wildlife, Alaskan Southeaster, Up Here, Weatherwise, Black and White Photography Magazine and Photographer's Forum-The Best of Photography Annuals, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
